Infinite Scrolling – 4/21/2013 Update on the Art Office Website Project

The last two weeks have been pretty great for the Art Office project. Since finishing the basic shell of the site, I’ve been able to move onto some new, fun additional features that Professor Fu was interested in implementing and these were/are substantially more challenging to bring to the site than previous features. But before I get into that, let’s discuss the results of our last meeting in terms of formulating the direction to go in for the last few weeks. Her final checklist for additional features is as follows:

  • Endless Scrolling Integration
  • Social Media Icons/Integration
  • Image Randomizer Feed (Possible)
  • Student Publishing
  • E-Mail Address Publishing
  • Cleaning Tags
  • Cleaning Links

This week, I’m going to focus on the endless scrolling and social media features. Basically, my entire time was taken up by figuring out how to get endless scrolling to play well with her site. In the end, I settled with the only endless scrolling plugin I could find “Infinite-Scrolling.” Installation was not as plug-and-play as I would have liked. It required extensive research and trial-and-error in order to get the plugin to work. While I won’t go into the technical details, the plugin works by you identifying the id’s and classes of many core WordPress elements, some of which were not in the template we were using. In the end, I got it to work, and a few minor tweaks later I got it to a point where I felt it was a fairly pretty and elegant solution.

On the social media integration front, there was nothing too difficult to implement. Professor Fu essentially just wanted a collection of links to various social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, Tubmlr, RSS). The template came with a feature for implementing these easily, but didn’t have a wide enough range of icons to cover all of them. Didn’t take too long to fix all these problems though and now the social media links are sitting high and mighty in the sidebar.

That’s it for this week, next week I’ll update on the remaining points of the project which are dwindling in size!
